What benefits can be expected from counselling?
I will work with you to achieve the changes that you desire.
Together, we will examine your circumstances in order to clarify your needs and wants, your values, and your goals. We will assess your unique strengths and limitations in order to develop realistic strategies, and will identify and address personal and practical obstacles to change.
My assistance in this process will involve helping you to identify alternatives, to examine different perspectives upon your situation, to creatively problem-solve, to generate new solutions, and to experience more possibilities.
I will provide a space where the focus is fully on you – your life, your dreams, your goals, your struggles, your concerns. You will find that I am an attentive sounding board; someone who will listen without judgment, ask the right questions and help you clarify your thoughts and desires
The type of counselling that can help you very much depends on the sort of problems you are facing. I use a variety of approaches to help my clients. Some of these approaches are more suitable for short-term problems that people encounter, and others are more suitable for dealing with longer-standing issues or patterns of behaviour. I chiefly use Person Centred or Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy depending on the issues that are problematic for you and also draw on psychodynamic ways of thinking. Interestingly, though, research consistently points to the fact that the TYPE of counselling you seek is not as important as other factors in determining how helpful counselling is for you - these other factors include the relationship you develop with your counsellor, the level of hope/expectation you bring to counselling, and things that are going on in your life at the time that you come for counselling.
